Immigration Frustrations Must Not Risk State’s Future
The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding illegal immigration has placed Arizona in the headlines once again for its state-led enforcement legislation. Key provisions of Senate Bill 1070 were struck down; and, while the provision for law enforcement to “ask for your papers” was not stricken, the ruling clarified that the state has no specific authority to act on its own, absent supervision from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
There is no question the federal government has not met the challenge of much-needed immigration reform for a 21st century American economy. There is no question the failure of the federal government to enact this reform has been felt deeply in Arizona. And there is no question SB 1070 is symbolic of the frustrations of Arizonans for these federal failures.
