Lisa Urias’ Perspective on New Legislation

May 20, 2010

The passage of SB1070 has touched a raw nerve in our community that has generated strong reactions and opposition from many individuals on all levels — see the article featured in today’s Arizona Republic written by Lisa Urias presenting her perspective on this new legislation.

Following are two excerpts:

“In the eyes of the world, the news about Arizona these days, to put it mildly, is hardly flattering. If the most avid proponents of our new immigration bill, SB 1070, are to be believed, Arizona is under siege, crime is rampant and day-to-day life here is chaos.  Besides the fact that none of that is true, that is not the Arizona I know and love.”

“The Arizona I know values its relationship with Mexico and our long-standing cultural and economic ties and is filled with people who understand that the vast majority of migrants to our state are not coming to tear us down but to help build up our society. This is because they, too, share in the belief that through hard work and determination, anything is possible. The Arizona I know welcomes not only hardworking laborers but the untold millions of tourists, professionals and business leaders who have transformed Mexico into our single largest trading partner.”
